Saturday, February 2, Neighborhood Street Cleanup
10 a.m.-noon, sponsored by the Aquarium of the Pacific
Help the ocean, and get a FREE admission ticket to the Aquarium of the Pacific by participating in the annual street cleanup. The Aquarium invites the public to join them at Cesar E. Chavez Park in Long Beach to help stop trash from entering into the Pacific Ocean. In Long Beach and many other cities, trash and runoff that enter storm drains go directly into the ocean. To help stop this from happening, the Aquarium is organizing this cleanup effort and encouraging Southland residents to help reduce ocean pollution by also picking up trash in their own neighborhoods throughout the year. The goal of the program is to teach participants of all ages that cleaning up trash in our cities actually keeps it from polluting our region's rivers, beaches, and ocean. In exchange for a bag of trash collected at the Aquarium's street cleanup location, each participant will receive a free ticket to the Aquarium, valid for one year. Bags, gloves, refreshments, and a spirit of camaraderie will be provided.

Learn all about cooking environmentally friendly seafood dishes and how your seafood consumption choices can help save our seas. Enjoy seafood tastings in the Aquarium's Great Hall, watch as local chefs do sustainable seafood cooking demonstrations, take home recipes, and visit booths by organizations that promote sustainable seafood practices. Join Citizen Forester Brett Beck as he continues to beautify his Long Beach neighborhood. Last fall, Brett and his community planted magnolia and Australian willow trees on six city blocks. Now, he will lead another community planting on the parkway bordering Alamitos Heights and Little Rec Park. Group will be planting 30 Southern Magnolia and Sweetshade trees. Come out and be a part of the fun!

Help save endangered birds from extinction with the Aquarium of the Pacific. The Aquarium invites you to enjoy a morning outdoors helping to restore the nesting habitat for endangered species of birds during their annual Endangered Species Habitat Restoration Day. Participants will be removing the non-native grasses from the habitat. The event will take place at the Seal Beach Wildlife Refuge located on the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station. Please RSVP if you are interested in participating.

Location: It’s A Grind, 4245 Atlantic, will be the headquarters and meeting place for the event.
49 trees will be planted along the Atlantic Avenue corridor between Carson and Burlinghall. This project is part of a brand new and unique partnership between the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association, Leadership Long Beach-Class of 2008, and the City of Long Beach, Department of Public Works.
* Approximately 100 volunteers are needed to plant the trees. It’s a great way for residents to come out and celebrate Arbor Day. Some tools and supplies will be provided by Public Works, but volunteers are encouraged to bring shovels and work gloves. Interested in helping with the tree planting? Contact:

Woven Image, the folk, celtic and jazz ensemble, will be giving a benefit concert on 4/27 with proceeds going to the Woven Image Sewing Institute in Hyderabad, India. Woven Image Music is comprised of pianist, composer and arranger Tom Parmeter Dyer, vocalist, composer and arranger, Carole Parmeter Dyer, percussionist Alan Cook, and cellist and bassist, Eddie Young.
Special guests for this concert include violinists Susan Rishik of the L.A. Chamber Orchestra, flautist Sharon Edmundson, vocalists Tim Edmundson, Larry Klevos, Lorrie Klevos and David Winter.
Woven Image performs songs from a wide range of styles drawing on folk, celtic, jazz and world music. Most of the songs feature vocalist Carole Parmeter Dyer, but many include singing by her husband Tom Parmeter Dyer. Included are songs with audience participation in an upbeat folk style.
Woven Image gives concerts in Southern California, the Bay Area, and California’s Central Valley, in an effort to create community and to raise money for social justice causes.
There will be a free-will offering taken at the concert.

The "star" of the show will be Saturn, along with a few star clusters and some starry-eyed visitors. Michael Beckage and other astronomers will be providing telescopes for viewing the skies.

Sunday, August 17, Mud Mania: A Celebration of Adobe, "Squish, Slither, and Stomp through the Muddiest Event in Town!"
12:30-4:30 p.m., Rancho Los Cerritos
Squish some history between your toes! Visit Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site and learn about our local “adobe” soil and its many uses throughout history. Guests will make real adobe bricks, plaster a wall with mud, construct a mini-adobe home, compete in mud relay races and much more. This is the muddiest and wackiest event in Southern California. Entertainment will be provided by The Witcher Brothers who will be performing bluegrass music throughout the event. Light refreshments will also be available for purchase.
