Wednessday, April 7, Earthquake Program, Hosted by the Long Beach Sierra Club Group
7:30 p.m. at the Environmental Services Bureau, 2929 East Willow, near Temple in Long Beach.
The speaker will be Dr. David K. Lynch, an astronomer and astrophysicist, who has turned his knowledge of astro-geology to the San Andreas Fault. He's the author of "Field Guide to the San Andreas Fault," a mile-by-mile guide to the world's most famous earthquake fault.
The presentation is especially timely, considering the devastating temblors in Chile and Haiti. The issue for Southern Californians isn't if, but when. Dr. Lynch can't answer that question -- no one can -- but he will provide the audience a better understanding of the forces at work beneath our feet.
The presentation is free and open to the public.

Saturday, April 10, Birdwalk at Los Cerritos Wetlands (Orange County side)
8 am, Spring Hike and Birdwalk, RAIN CANCELS
Meet in the parking lot of Gum Grove Park (Avalon Street entrance) which is a long narrow park that runs along the Los Cerritos Wetlands. It is an easy walk and a great way to see the birds, butterflies, and native ground squirrels. Most of the migratory ducks have moved on; however, we are sure to see several species of swallows, hawks, kingbirds, and beautiful spring migrants, including colorful warblers. As we walk along, we will often observe the birds and other wildlife who use the wetlands crossing into the park and back again. Recently, we were treated to an absolutely fantastic look at a Great Horned Owl sitting in a tree, and a pair of hawks flying out of the same tree!

Green designers create comfortable, healthy, and environmentally conscious spaces in addition to providing the overall benefits of mainstream interior design. This course presents an in-depth introduction to "green" interior design practices in both commercial and residential projects. We will highlight issues relating to sustainable materials, IAQ (indoor air quality), energy efficient lighting, water conservation, certification systems, and client benefits.

In the last couple years there has been a veritable explosion in the number of "backyard gardens" - including a very prominent one at the White House - as people are growing more concerned about where their food is coming from, how healthy it is, and how it's grown and transported... as well as trying to save money. In our community, Long Beach Organic has been encouraging that for a while.
Long Beach Organic, which works to promote organic gardening and local production in the urban environment, have helped establish numerous community gardens around Long Beach. And they are always seeking unused urban spaces for future garden sites.
Spencer Langdon, President of Long Beach Organic, and Joe Corso, Garden Director will be at our next task force meeting to tell us more about the good work they are doing, and to let you know how you can get involved, either in the wider community or in your own backyard.

Atkins switched her family to a vegan diet seven years ago and never looked back. She’ll explain how other families can do the same and still enjoy good eats.

Thursday, May 27, Eating for Two: Effective Nutrition that Combats Stress
5:30 to 7:00pm, Everyday Zen Relaxation Studio, Long Beach
Scientists know that stress and malnutrition have an influence on a mother and her developing fetus; but now, more discussion is focused on the influence of the mother's stress on her baby and the relationship between nutrients and stress.
Mothers who experience prolonged stress may quickly become depleted of certain vitamins and minerals. Similarly, having a diet filled with varietal nutrients may help combat the negative physical affects of stress like strengthening the immune system and lowering blood pressure.
It appears that nutrition and mental wellness go hand in hand for the developing fetus and mother. What are some nutrition options that combat the physical effects of stress, and promote overall physical health for her and her new arrival? Join Chai Benson, MS, MFTI and Tom O'Keefe to discuss the multiple benefits of preventative health methods. Start your baby out on a path to nutrition and stress reduction before she/he gets here!

Saturday, July 10, Bird Walk
What: Summer Walk and Nature/Bird Walk
When: Saturday, July 10th, 8:00 a.m.
Where: Gum Grove Park, off Pacific Coast Highway at the border of Seal Beach and Long Beach. Meet at the Avalon Street entrance.
Our birdwalk starts off in the parking lot of Gum Grove Park (Avalon Street entrance) which is a long narrow park that runs along the Los Cerritos Wetlands. It is an easy walk and a great way to see the birds and butterflies amid splashes of colorful flowers. We are sure to see swallows, hawks, kingbirds, and colorful warblers. Hooded orioles, several species of raptors, owls, and a number of other species are known to nest in the area. As we walk along, we observe how wildlife uses the park and the property that the Los Cerritos Wetlands Authority hopes to acquire later this year.
Join us as our walk leaders share their knowledge and passion for the wildlife of the wetlands and as they help you envision a day when the tidal flow is restored to the historic wetlands at the mouth of the San Gabriel River. It's not hard to imagine a fully restored wetlands looking like Upper Newport Bay. If you have questions, please contact eldoradoaudubon@yahoo.com.

Saturday, August 7, Astronomy Night Star Party
7:30-10 pm, Grassy area at the Seal Beach pier
Come join a group of dedicated volunteer astronomers as we share our powerful telescopes with the public. Early August means that the summer constellations are high in the sky and well placed for viewing. There will be no moon this evening and so we will spend all of our time focusing on some of the best star clusters, nebulas and double stars visible all year. Late in the evening we should be able to get our first look at the planet Jupiter where we'll see the Galilean moons and the colorful cloud bands encircling the planet. These events are co-hosted by Bogart's Coffee House, our favorite purveyor of hot drinks and goodies to keep you warm while you are waiting for your turn at the eyepiece. We set the telescopes up across the street from Bogart's next to the Seal Beach Pier.
This is a perfect event for children of all ages! Come enjoy an amazing view.
